AMTA-OR Corvallis Unit News
Jenni Malm, LMT #12421
The Corvallis Unit meets the first Thursday of the month
from 6:30 PM to 9 PM at the Osborn Aquatic Center on
Circle Blvd. and Highland in Corvallis. Meetings are
open to members and non-members alike. The first half
hour is spent networking and is followed by a two hour
continuing education presentation. Members receive
certificates for the two contact hours of continuing
education, and non-members can purchase a certificate
for $30.00 ($15.00 per contact hour credit).
Our most recent meeting on May 6th featured Todd Bilby,
DC presenting First Line Therapy. Dr. Bilby expertly
outlined the signs and symptoms of metabolic syndrome,
explained the research that has been conducted
supporting the First Line Therapy program, and walked
participants through elements in the program. First Line
Therapy is designed to help people lead healthier
lifestyles through proper diet and exercise which leads
to better body composition. One of the goals of First
Line Therapy is to have a healthy ratio of lean muscle
mass to fat. Weight loss programs often focus only on
losing weight, but losing 3 lbs. muscle mass and 3 lbs.
of fat is not equivalent to losing 9 lbs. of fat while
gaining 3 lbs. of muscle mass even though the bathroom
scale will count a 6 lb. loss in both scenarios. Having
a healthy ratio of fat to muscle mass is important for
health and can be achieved and maintained by correcting
and or preventing metabolic syndrome.
At the June 3rd continuing education class, Jenni Malm
will present "Defining Our Profession: What is a Body of
Knowledge?".
The Unit will not meet during the months of July and
August but will reconvene the first Thursday in
September.
